چکیده

Abstract Self-propelled particulate systems manifest certain collective behavior of living matter, which have been the subject intense research over past decades. One elegant methods for realizing such active motions is by means custom synthesized Janus particles suspended in a catalytic medium that can be triggered upon illumination ultraviolet light. In this work, evolution particle dynamics from passive diffusive to ballistic light was probed multispeckle x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS). This technique enables not only studying emergence three dimensions (3D) but also deciphering different contributions overall dynamics. Using combination homodyne and heterodyne analysis, ensemble averaged mean velocity, velocity fluctuations diffusion coefficient were determined thermodynamic limit. Results revealed gradual transition with systematic increase activity. At intermediate region, dominated Gaussian an enhanced relaxation rate weaker wave vector dependence similar superdiffusive behavior. For highest activity, became purely Lorentzian-like distribution fluctuations. Presented results demonstrate aspects investigated 3D broad range Péclet numbers other control parameters XPCS.

Emergent behavior in active colloids

Active colloids are microscopic particles, which self-propel through viscous fluids by converting energy extracted from their environment into directed motion. We first explain how artificial microswimmers move forward by generating near-surface flow fields via self-phoresis or the self-induced Marangoni effect. We then discuss generic features of the dynamics of single active colloids in bulk ...

Polymer bridging probed by magnetic colloids.

Superparamagnetic particles offer a new way to probe the kinetics of adhesive processes. Two different scenarios of physical adhesion are studied. The thermal activation of van der Waals adhesion is well described by an Arrhenius model. In contrast, it is necessary to go beyond the Arrhenius description to understand the thermal activation of bridging between colloidal particles by a polymer at...

Actin-driven cell dynamics probed by Fourier transform light scattering

We applied the newly developed Fourier transform light scattering (FTLS) to study dynamic light scattering in single live cells, at a temporal scale of seconds to hours. The nanoscale cell fluctuations were measured with and without the active actin contribution. We found experimentally that the spatio-temporal signals rendered by FTLS reveal interesting cytoskeleton dynamics in glial cells (th...

Properties of Nuclei Probed by Laser Light

12 E arly in the past century it was discovered that basic properties of nuclei influence the atomic spectra. Energy levels of atoms with an odd number of protons or neutrons exhibit hyperfine structure [1]. This was found to arise from a nuclear magnetic moment interacting with the magnetic field produced by the shell electrons. The magnetic moment is associated with a characteristic angular m...
